Teaching Kids Respect
One of the major concerns that most parents have is that today’s youth do not show proper respect for adults and their peers. Teaching kids respect is a challenge for two reasons: it has become “uncool” to show respect and, because kids learn by example, they learn disrespect from the disrespectful behavior exhibited by adults and their peers. The lack of respect shows up in many places in today’s society:
- Kids calling adults by their first name instead addressing them by their title and surname. For example, the proper way a child to show respect for an adult would be to call him or her Mr. Jones or Mrs. Jones.
- Sports fields where it has become okay to taunt and tease an opponent.
- Talking back to parents and educators.
- A disregard for the rules of the road creating ‘road-rage’; kids learn disrespect when they see this occur in the car!
- Too many places to name!
There are a few facts experts agree with when teaching kids respect:
Teaching kids respect needs to begin at the earliest age possible!
Teaching kids respect is much easier when they are younger rather than beginning when they are teenagers!
Teaching kids respect requires parents and guardians to be respectful role models because kids learn what they see!
One of the best ways to teach kids respect is to review ways to be respectful with children before they are in the situation!
Third party resources are great help when teaching kids respect because they reinforce and validate the parents’ or guardians’ lessons!
Boost Kids is that Third Party Resource
Boost Kids is a wonderful teaching tool that makes it fun for kids to learn how to be respectful! The main component of the Boost Kids program is a CD-ROM that organizes 28 lessons designed to teach respect and boost children's self confidence into fun video lessons that show kids handling situations the wrong way and then the right way! The topics of Boost Kids are reinforced by a lesson quiz at the end of each lesson on the CD-ROM, a companion activity book that elaborates on each topic, and a set of flash cards with scenerios parents can work on with their children.
