Teaching Respect
Teaching respect is a huge challenge for any parent or adult working with children in today’s world. It seems like more and more children today lack the proper respect like that of previous generations. There are many reasons why teaching respect has become so difficult, which include:
Pop Culture
Children today grow up in a world with music videos and song lyrics that make it “cool” to show disrespect towards adults, law enforcement, and, for young men, disrespect of women. All of these influences make teaching respect to children especially challenging.
“ESPNization” of Athletics
The blame does not rest solely with ESPN, however, the world of TV sports with highlights has changed the nature of sports for many kids. Instead of teaching teamwork and discipline, watching highlights of athletes obnoxiously celebrating their personal good effort or watching them taunt opponents has made sporting activities seem like more about doing a good job in order to catch the limelight and not so much about good sportsmanship and working together as a team. These influences also make teaching respect to children especially challenging.
Any parent or adult working with children needs to stress to those children how important it is to be respectful to others and teaching respect works best by being respectful. Some other important topics to teach when teaching respect to children are:
- Don’t talk about other people behind their backs
- Avoid sneering and obscene gestures
- Address adults with the proper respect and tone
Teaching respect to kids today is harder to teach than past generations because today’s children are exposed to a culture that is lacking respect. The only way to improve the level of respect in today’s society is to make sure that all parents, guardians, teachers, and adults are consistently teaching respect to all children with which they encounter
