Teaching Social Skills To Children: Some
Helpful Tips!

It is important to start teaching social skills to children at the earliest ages while their habits are still developing.  Children need to learn social skills such as meeting and greeting, eye contact, listening and asking questions because the a person’s ability to do those three things really distinguishes the confident people from the less confident.  The good news is that it is very easy to start teaching social skills to children and you will be able to find plenty of opportunities for them to test out these skills on a daily basis.

A few key lessons that are easily taught to teach social skills to children include:

Saying a Person’s Name When Greeting:
It is amazing just how saying someone’s name when greeting him or her makes that person feel much more comfortable with the greeter and, not to mention, it’s just plain good etiquette.  Parents should teach their kids to greet someone by not just saying ‘hello’ or ‘hi’, but to say ‘Hi John’ or ‘Hi Mrs.Smith.’  This little technique helps your child build confidence by teaching the child how to be comfortable in social settings. Since the child is more comfortable, the other person is as well, allowing conversation to flow easily.

Ask Questions:
While engaged in a conversation with someone, it makes him or her feel as if you are really interested in what they are saying if you ask relevant questions.  Children, as well as adults, will make more friends by being interested in others rather than by trying to make others interested in them or by wasting time trying to be impressive.  There are a couple of key topics to hit upon while teaching social skills to children:

  1. Ask questions with more than a one word answer.
  2. Keep the conversation active by listening and responding both physically and verbally.
  3. Be honest about your own interests and opinions.

Having your child practice these skills every time they meet someone will most certainly give them a solid foundation on learning how to meet and great people and boost confidence!
